Flash-spinning is a novel method for preparing plexifilamentary film-fibril strands from fiber-forming polymers. In this process, the polymer was dissolved in a solvent, which was a non-solvent for the polymer at or below its normal boiling point, at a temperature above the normal boiling point of the solvent. Then the solution was extruded into a region of substantially lower pressure and temperature. The superheating temperature caused the solvent to vaporize and thereby the extrudate was cooled to form a plexifilamentary film-fibril strand of the polymer.
