Ethylbenzene is an important raw material for the production of styrene, which is mainly obtained through the alkylation reaction of benzene and ethylene in industry. At present, the main processes used internationally for ethylbenzene alkylation reactions include aluminum chloride liquid-phase catalysis, molecular sieve gas-phase catalysis, and liquid-phase catalysis. The catalyst of aluminum chloride catalytic method has strong corrosiveness, which brings great inconvenience to equipment maintenance and post-treatment of reaction solution. With the continuous development of materials science, the various properties of catalysts are also constantly improving, which provides a foundation for the development of new ethylbenzene processes. The aluminum chloride catalytic process is gradually being replaced by the molecular sieve catalytic process.
The ethylbenzene process catalyzed by molecular sieves is mainly divided into two phases: gas phase and liquid phase. In the gas-phase production process, the reaction is carried out under high temperature and medium pressure conditions. The advantages of this method are low catalyst dosage, long service life, no corrosion, high yield of ethylbenzene, low material and energy consumption, and the ability to produce steam as a byproduct. Meanwhile, this process can also be applied to the ethylbenzene process using dilute ethylene produced from catalytic cracking dry gas as raw material. The disadvantage of this method is that the content of xylene in the product is relatively high, which affects the quality of the product. In the liquid-phase process, the reaction is carried out under medium temperature and medium pressure conditions, which is the same as the gas-phase process. The advantages of this method are long catalyst life, no corrosion, high ethylbenzene yield, and low material and energy consumption. However, unlike the gas-phase process, the reaction temperature of the liquid-phase process is more than 100 ℃ lower than that of the gas-phase process, and the energy consumption is significantly reduced. At the same time, the xylene content in the product is significantly reduced. Therefore, more and more newly built ethylbenzene/styrene plants are adopting liquid-phase alkylation technology.
