Brazing is a metal-joining process that involves the use of a filler metal to bond two or more base metals without melting the base metals themselves. The filler metal, which has a lower melting point than the base metals, is heated to its melting point and distributed between the closely fitted surfaces of the joint by capillary action. The key steps in the brazing process include cleaning the surfaces to be joined to remove oxides and contaminants, applying a flux to prevent oxidation during heating, and then heating the assembly to a temperature above the melting point of the filler metal but below the melting points of the base metals. Once the filler metal flows into the joint and cools, it solidifies, creating a strong, leak-proof bond. Brazing can join a wide variety of metals, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and nickel alloys.
