Global Bio-based Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF) Market Growth 2023-2029
The global Bio-based Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF) market size is projected to grow from US$ million in 2022 to US$ million in 2029; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of % from 2023 to 2029.
Bio-based polyethylene furanyl dicarboxylate (PEF) is a 100% recyclable bio-based polymer produced from renewable raw materials derived from plants. Called the next generation of polyesters, PEF has great potential to replace polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a durable polymer derived from traditional synthetic resources. PEF is still an emerging material and no manufacturer has yet commercialized it. The synthesis technology of PEF and its key monomers is still very challenging and has not yet been industrialized; at the same time, studies of PE structural properties have shown some deficiencies in its performance and modifications are needed to facilitate the processing and application of PEF. PEF offers many advantages over PET, such as superior oxygen and carbon dioxide barriers, so it can keep food and beverages fresher longer by blocking the entry of oxygen and CO2; it is lightweight, has excellent mechanical and thermal properties, and is potentially cost-competitive on an industrial scale over the long term. However, today there are no PEF bottles per se, and disrupting PET will require not only new material production routes and capabilities, but also new conversion and recycling methods and capabilities.
The major global producers of bio-based polyethylene furanyl dicarboxylate are Avantium, GuoShengTech, Sugarenergy, AVA Biochem AG, Sulzer, Corbion, Leafresource, etc. The top seven producers together account for more than 95% of the market share, with the largest producer being Avantium with 67.86% of the market share The largest producer is Avantium with 67.86% market share. The global PEF production regions are mainly located in Europe, China, etc. In terms of product category, food-grade bio-based poly furanyl dicarboxylate has a higher market share of 66.67%, while industrial grade has a lower share. In terms of its applications, food and beverage packaging bottles are its top application area with a market share of 85.716%, followed by films and fibers.
