In terms of its chemical structure, the anion is a polymeric consisting of distorted octahedral Mo centers liked by tetrahedral molybdate centers. When prepared in the absence of water as its tetrabutylammonium salt, dimolybdate adopts the centrosymmetric structure observed for dichromate.
