North America Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) Market Size, Share & Industry Trends Analysis Report By Capacity, By Requirement, By Implementation Type, By Vertical (Commercial, Residential and Industrial), By Country and Growth Forecast, 2022 - 2028
The North America Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) Market would witness market growth of 8.0% CAGR during the forecast period (2022-2028).
The DOAS system is sized to fit the needs, and no oversizing is necessary. Contrary to common practice, VAV box minimums must account for both the ventilation needs of the area and the ventilation air percentage in the supply air. For instance, a space requiring 5663 standard liters per minute (SLPM) (200 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM)) of ventilation air that is served with 40% ventilation air in the supply air would then require a box minimum configuration of 14158 SLPM (500 SCFM) (i.e. 200/0.4) rather than the conventional 5663 SLPM (SLPM) (200 SCFM). When the box minimum requirements are adequately configured to meet ventilation requirements, the possibility f significant terminal reheat becomes a concern. Therefore, all correctly functioning air VAV systems will always require more terminal reheat than the dedicated outdoor air systems supplying the same-temperature air.
The failure to separate the space latent and sensible loads results in high relative humidity in occupied spaces with low sensible loads. In order to decouple the space sensible and latent loads, properly built specialized outdoor air systems can accommodate 100% of the space latent loads as well as a portion of the space sensible loads. Then, a parallel sensible-only cooling system is used to handle sensible loads that are not satisfied by the dedicated outdoor air systems. As a result, there is a strong motivation to control the space's latent loads separately from the space's sensible loads in order to avoid indoor air quality issues associated with dampness.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is publishing a final rule to create definitions for direct expansion-dedicated outdoor air systems and unitary dedicated outdoor air systems. The Energy Policy and Conservation Act, as modified, classifies unitary DOASs as a subset of small, big, as well as very large commercial package air conditioning and heating systems. In addition, DOE is designing a test technique to measure the energy efficiency of DX-DOAS, which is consistent with the latest edition of the specific industry consensus standard requirements for DX-DOAS, with some minor modifications. As part of this rulemaking, DOE is also adopting supporting definitions, energy efficiency measures for dehumidification and heating modes, and procedures governing public comments.
