Particulate matter is made up of microscopic solid or liquid droplets which are so minute that breathing them in can have major negative effects on one's health. Opacity is frequently employed as a gauge for the amount of emissions of particulate matter.

Every year in April, official figures on air quality in the UK are also released. These figures offer a convenient evaluation of long-term trends in air quality as determined by the AURN. Every September, measurements from the country's monitoring networks are merged with modelling results to create a nationwide evaluation of air quality in comparison to the limit and target levels for air pollutant concentrations set both globally and domestically.
