One traction motor driving each axle with a gear drive is currently considered best practice. As a "nose-suspended traction motor," the traction motor is typically three-point suspended between both the driven axle and the bogie frame. In the instance of the renowned Pennsylvania Railroad GG1, each axle was driven by a quill drive using two frame-mounted motors.

Improved dynamics are obtained, allowing for better high-speed performance, by installing the comparatively heavy traction engine connected to the power car's frame as opposed to the bogie.

To allow interoperability among different electric vehicles across the region, some European nations, including France and Belgium, are concentrating on developing the infrastructure needed for electric vehicle charging. Despite a rise in the proportion of legal ULEV vehicles on UK roads, just a small portion of all licensed vehicles are ULEVs.
