India Aquaculture Feed Industry Market Overview and Size

India aquaculture feed market industry expanded with a CAGR of 3.5% in between FY’17 and FY’22 on the basis of revenue generated. One of the major determinants of the growth of aqua feed market in India is attributed to surging demand of shrimp globally. In FY’20 export of frozen shrimps contributed to the majority share compared to the export of other fisheries product. This resulted in aqua feed manufacturers producing large quantities of shrimp feeds to cater to the growing demand. Due to the massive contribution of shrimps to the overall aqua culture market, aqua feed manufacturing companies have initiated the process of focusing on producing larger amount of shrimp feeds to cater to the domestic as well as international demand. In FY’22, shrimp feed contributed to the majority share of the overall revenue generated by the aqua feed industry in India. As of FY’22, there were approximately 30 high-tech feed mills operating to cater to the rising export and domestic demand. Coupled with that, the increasing awareness on health for consuming residue free food along with the increase in per capita income resulted in the growth of seafood sales which is good for health, subsequently stimulating the demand for availing quality aqua feeds. Government initiative to offer subsidies and incentives for construction of new ponds, purchase of feeds and setting up of processing units fuelled the growth of aqua feed market in India in between FY’17 and FY’22. The advent of COVID-19 negatively impacted the aquaculture and aqua feed industry due to the disruption in supply chain, falling demand of shrimp overseas and halt in international trading activities. To mitigate the effect of COVID-19, government of India announced a relief package in FY’20 under the “Atmanirbhar Scheme” to support the fisheries, aqua culture and aqua feed industry. Simultaneously, the government also announced reduction of custom duty on aqua feed products such as black tiger shrimp, algal oil etc. in the union budget of FY’22 to support the exporters. Average price of feed per metric ton expanded at a CAGR of 5.2% in between FY’17 and FY’22. The gradual increase of the prices contributed in enhancing the business prospect of exporters and aqua feed manufacturers.

India Aquaculture Feed Market Segmentation

By Type of Feed (Shrimp Feed, Fish Feed and Others): Revenue generated from the sales of shrimp feed contributed to the majority share in FY’22, due to the surging demand of shrimp across the world. Shrimps formed the major chunk of aquaculture market in India, and the rising demand of shrimps globally contributed in exporters producing more quantities of shrimps by availing quality feeds. Fish feeds, molluscs and crustaceans’ feeds were the other forms of aquaculture feeds in the Indian market, which captured a small chunk of the aqua market in FY’22.

By Type of Ingredients (Soy, Corn, Fish Oil, Fish Meal and Others): Soy was the most demanded ingredient for aqua feed in FY’22, contributing to the highest share on the basis of revenue generated. Increasing fish seed production due to the excessive demand of consumers preferring healthy seafood resulted in the increasing usage of fish meal, which contributed to the second highest revenue share in FY’22. However, limited knowledge of various nutrients requirement other than the conventional sources, serve as drawback for the aqua feed market.

By End User (Commercial and Household): Aqua feed dealers & exporters, aqua feed companies and local aqua farmers form the buyer side of aqua feed industry. Sales of aqua feed products mainly take place between the manufacturing firms and the commercial end user, while households (local aqua farmers) contribute to a significantly smaller percentage of overall sales. In FY’22, revenue generated through sales of aqua feed products to commercial end users contributed to the majority share.

By Distribution (Store Based and Online): Distribution of aqua feed products through stores contributed to the majority revenue share, while online based distribution channel contributed to a share of only 2% in FY’22. Online distribution channel remained largely inefficient in India as of FY’22. Incumbent firms in the aqua feed market have not been able to channelize their supply chain optimally to incorporate sales through online medium, thereby are dependent on the conventional store-based distribution channel.

By Region (Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu & Puducherry, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Others): Andhra Pradesh was the largest feed consuming state in FY’22, contributing to the majority share on the basis of revenue generated through sales of aqua feed products. Andhra Pradesh is the most favourable state for aquaculture and aqua feed industry, due to the various subsidies/incentives offered by the government for setting up farms, purchasing feeds, and setting up processing units and tax exemptions. The subsidy is available for various items like renovation or repair of ponds, construction of new ponds, first-year inputs, etc. under a centrally sponsored subsidy scheme implemented by the majority of the State Governments through FFDA's for different categories of farmers and from National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).

Competitive Landscape in India Aquaculture Feed Market

The market is majorly concentrated among few major players such as Avanti Feeds and C.P. Aquaculture among others. The feed manufacturing companies’ witness’s low threat of substitution as aqua feed constitutes significant component of the total input required in aquaculture. There are other international players and a lot of small domestic players operating in the ecosystem. However, the threat of new entrants along with the need to cater to excess demand makes the market moderately competitive. There is lot of scope for new players to enter the market. This is because of huge untapped potential, favourable government incentive plans & schemes and an excess demand for aqua feed. Some of the major players operating in the ecosystem are Avanti Feeds, Alltech India, Waterbase, Zeal Aqua and Cargill among others.

India Aquaculture Feed Market Future Outlook and Projections

The market size on the basis of revenue is expected to grow at a five-year CAGR of 4.2% in between FY’22 and FY’27E. Rising global seafood demand coupled with surging consumption of shrimps is expected to drive the growth of aqua feed market in coming years. Integration of technology in daily operations of feed manufacturers will contribute in enhancing their business potential as well as transform the aquaculture and aqua feed industry, which paves a path for efficient supply chain management, increase in production volume and greater opportunities for foreign exchange earnings. The industry has witnessed progress and development in terms of getting support of artificial breeding technologies, knowledge of nutritional requirement to aquatic animals, aqua feed processing technology, and feed production equipment and so on. As population grow and pressure on wild fisheries mounts around the world, aquaculture will continue to attract attention and capture a higher share of the human food protein market. Owing to the limited availability of marine feed resources & the rising demand for fish results in opening up of new opportunities for the feed market to integrate. Species diversification coupled with surging exports will serve as a major catalyst for the growth of aquaculture feed market in coming years owing to increasing awareness on consumption of healthier diet and shifting preference towards protein rich diet across the world.
