This IDC study presents the updated five-year forecast for smartphone shipments worldwide by operating system. The smartphone market will reach 1.21 billion units shipped in 2024, up 4.0% from the 1.16 billion units shipped in 2023. From there, shipments will hit 1.30 billion units in 2028, the final year of our forecast period, resulting in a CAGR of 2.3%."5G-powered devices continue to fuel the market as these devices will display a near 16% growth in 2024 as adoption continues to expand across all regions and markets," said Anthony Scarsella, research director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. "The 15.9% growth in 2024 will be followed by another year of double-digit growth in 2025 (+13.2%) as 5G market share will climb to 74.4%, up from 67.2% in 2024. With 5G devices becoming less relevant in most developed markets, the growth of 5G in emerging markets will play a central role in driving shipments throughout the forecast period. With the overall smartphone demonstrating a CAGR of 2.3% from 2024 to 2028, 5G shipments will display an imposing 9.1% growth rate for the same period."
