Worldwide Quantum Computing Forecast, 2024–2028: Quantum Optimization and the Quest for the Killer Quantum Use Case
This IDC study provides historical data (2020–2023) and forecast data (2024–2028) for the worldwide quantum computing market. These data focus on end user spend in two categories — quantum computing-specific and quantum computing-related — both of which cover the systems, platforms, technologies, and services customers need to use pure quantum computing systems, quantum-inspired computing systems (such as simulators and emulators), and quantum computing technologies that either developed in response to quantum computing or leverage quantum mechanics for something other than quantum computation. For each of these categories, IDC estimated the value of end user spend. In this study, IDC also illustrates the changing trends in quantum computing investments. "The value of quantum computing will only be realized when end users from a variety of industries can leverage the technology to solve real-world problems," says Heather West, PhD, research manager, Quantum Computing, Infrastructure Systems, Platforms, and Technologies Research at IDC. "To accelerate the adoption of quantum computing, quantum hardware vendors need to focus on both the development of scalable, error-corrected hardware, as well as quantum software that makes infrastructure management, resource allocation, and application development easier for non-quantum computing end users."
