Worldwide Facility Management Applications Market Shares, 2021: Occupancy Levels Reshape Facility Operations and Maintenance

This IDC study provides market share data for the facility management (FM) applications market in 2021. "Hybrid work environment became a reality in 2021 as the return to work stalled due to a combination of mitigating factors. Reconfiguring of building space added complexities for owner/operators yet allowed them to reduce energy consumption by shuttering areas, or whole floors, of buildings. The majority of FM software upgrades or new system deployment were cloud based, as many owner/operators desire to move IT resources, and their data, to more secured locations and shed the onsite datacenter. In addition, 2021 was also a time to work down the backlog of planned maintenance work, deferred in 2020 when many buildings sat totally idle," says Bob Stallard, research manager, Enterprise Asset Management and Smart Facilities at IDC. "FM software vendors should be encouraging clients to plan purchases, for their upcoming budget cycle, and help them understand the need to address increased requirements for security, workplace monitoring, space management, and sustainability."
