Western Digital’s Separation of Flash and HDD Business Units with Goal to Drive Focus on Execution Going Forward

This IDC Market Note provides an overview of Western Digital (WD)’s decision to separate the company’s flash and hard disk drive (HDD) business units into two independent public companies. “The very difficult market for HDD and flash over the past year has created an environment that necessitates focused execution. While WD has executed well, the reality of the storage industry is that WD’s decision will allow the company to better focus on each business and allow investors to participate in a more transparent way in each business,” said Jeff Janukowicz, research vice president, Solid State Drives and Enabling Technologies, and Ed Burns, research director, Worldwide Hard Disk Drives, at IDC.
