Telco Operator Digital Units: Keep It In or Spin It Out?


This IDC Market Perspective discusses the different approaches European telecom operators can take in operating their digital units. As European telcos recognize enterprise customers' need to embrace digital transformation across different verticals and domains, they are also looking into their different objectives, technologies, and adoption speeds. This document describes telcos' approaches and describes the advantages and challenges for each option. "The European telecom sector is acknowledging that new use cases and applications are needed to drive 5G adoption. They are identifying opportunities via digital innovation mechanisms and setting up digital units to boost the development and delivery of such solutions," said Alejandro Cadenas, associate vice president, European Telco Mobility, IDC. "CSPs that successfully set up digital units will be better positioned to capture this rising opportunity, but digital units shall be set up considering the current status and capabilities of the CSP."
