A Tale of Two Data Lakehouses: Snowflake Versus Databricks

A Tale of Two Data Lakehouses: Snowflake Versus Databricks

This IDC Market Note describes and compares the product positioning and claims of two vendors, Databricks and Snowflake, each of whom held their annual user conference in the spring of 2024. It details the key announcements and shows how the products fit together in each case to represent a solution set, commonly called a data lakehouse, for collecting, managing, and analyzing data of enterprise significance on an ongoing basis. It also delves into specifics regarding how the data is governed and how it is made available for sharing outside the controlled environment in which it normally exists."Longitudinally, these two vendors are moving in opposite technology directions, and right at each other," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software at IDC. Lynne Schneider, research director for Data as a Service and Location and Geospatial Intelligence at IDC adds, "Both firms recognize that data collaboration is a key success factor both within and between enterprises and made the term collaboration central in their conference messaging."
