The Coming Shift to 5G New Radio Reduced Capability in China

New Radio reduced capability (NR-RedCap) (3GPP Rel-17) will usher in an era of broadband cellular connectivity with optimized power consumption control and will become the mainstay of cellular 5G IoT deployments. Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and enhanced Machine-Type Communication (eMTC) (Category M1/2 [Cat M1/2]) will also see enhancements in Release 16/17, further improving throughput data rates. In markets such as the People’s Republic of China, where the majority of installed IoT devices are Long-Term Evolution Cat-4, there will be a gradual migration to RedCap, but the majority of RedCap connections will be new connections and not migrations.
