Security and Other Challenges Will Lead to Containerized Workloads Repatriating Within Next Two Years

This IDC Market Perspective looks at a trend in container technology. IDC's IT Infrastructure for Storage and Data Management Survey, 4Q21 found more than half of organizations intend to repatriate 51% or more of their containerized applications back to traditional environments within the next two years. Security is the top reason driving this, and IDC sees improving container security as the best way to slow container repatriation."The rate of intended repatriation of containerized workloads indicates organizations have adopted the technology too quickly, without accounting for security or complexity challenges that would arise. This happened with the cloud when it was new, and it will take education and maturation of the technology for organizations to avoid future container deployment pitfalls," said Johnny Yu, research manager, Storage and Computing at IDC.
