In the Quest for Enterprise Intelligence, High-Performance Computing Goes Mainstream

This IDC Perspective discusses how organizations are embracing HPC to further develop as intelligent enterprises.Furthermore, ushered in by the digital-first approach, many organizations undergoing digital transformation seek HPC platforms to reinvent their R&D product and process development to remain competitive. HPC is increasingly being adopted by industries and businesses to develop world-class products, services, and innovations to boost revenue, profits, and market share. HPC going mainstream as a result of these efforts has profound impact on markets, industries, and the user community. AI has brought the infrastructure into the datacenter that enables organizations to also run HPC use cases; this has triggered a convergence of HPC with AI in terms of infrastructure and in a deeper sense, wherein tasks are being completed as an integrated AI/HPC run. Traditional HPC always seeks the highest performance while maintaining affordability, and organizations new to HPC will have to heed this approach. As a sign that organizations understand this, established corporations, start-ups, and for-profit partnerships are joining more traditional HPC customers (e.g., federal government, national research laboratories) to implement best practices within their strategy and road map. With a limitless and continually expanding list of use case scenarios, coupled with an exponential increase in data proliferation, there is a tremendous opportunity for organizations to gain advanced analytical insights from HPC. The pursuit for higher performance also brings about convergence of HPC with quantum computing, as practitioners from various disciplines try to design infrastructure with a hybrid quantum/classical approach to work on the most complex use cases."With the convergence of HPC, AI, Big Data, and quantum computing, infrastructure consolidation adds to the complexity of managing these highly complex and diverse workloads. The good news is that, given the importance of these workloads, there will be sustained and even increased funding for them," said Josephine Palencia, director of research, High Performance Computing at IDC.
