Oracle Introduces PostgreSQL Running Native on OCI
This IDC Market Note summarizes a recent announcement made by Oracle Corporation regarding a new OCI service in support of PostgreSQL. It includes an explanation of the service and how the OCI features make the database more robust and performant than it would be in a do-it-yourself scenario and offers a view regarding the overall significance of this announcement."On November 14, Oracle announced general availability of the OCI Database with PostgreSQL service, which makes the full open source PostgreSQL operational on OCI as a database service with full Oracle support," says Carl Olofson, research vice president for Data Management Software research at IDC. "Most database services that support PostgreSQL applications are either actually built on modified versions of PostgreSQL or merely emulate the PostgreSQL API and SQL (i.e., they are 'wire compatible'). By contrast, this service offers the full open source PostgreSQL that is available based on upstream PostgreSQL open source community team (formally called the PostgreSQL Global Development Group)."
