This IDC Market Forecast update provides a projection of user spending and delves into market trends and prospects for the Japan Internet of Things (IoT) market by industry sector and by technology. From an industrial perspective, IDC believes that the tightening of working hour regulations in April 2024 will intensify the impact of labor shortages in the logistics and medical segments, increasing demand for IoT solutions that facilitate business streamlining. In addition, because of the decline in the price of surveillance cameras following the price drop in image sensors brought by the spread of smartphones with built-in high-performance cameras, and the technological evolution of image recognition AI, the adoption of IoT solutions is increasing in image-related use cases. In terms of connectivity, IoT satellite communication services that are compatible with narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT), which is compliant with non-terrestrial network (NTN), included in the Release 17 of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), whose functional specifications were frozen in March 2022, are now available."Systems integrators (SIs) and carriers should focus on the logistics segment in which the IoT solution market is growing because of the labor shortage. In terms of technology, they should focus on developing application, security, and analytics software, as well as IoT platforms, which are expected to have high growth rates," says Yoriyuki Yamashita, research manager, Infrastructure and Devices, IDC Japan.
