The Internet Exchange Ecosystem in India

The Internet Exchange Ecosystem in India

Internet exchanges (IXs) facilitate the exchange of internet traffic reducing latency and cost of bandwidth. They are a crucial component of the Digital India campaign. IX is a physical infrastructure that directly interconnects Internet service providers (ISPs), content delivery networks (CDNs), over-the-top (OTT) players, DNS root servers, national and international telco networks, enterprises, and social media networks. "India is one of the largest internet markets in the world. With the demand for fast, reliable, and stable connection for entertainment, education and work at reasonable cost drives the need for internet exchanges across the country. Traffic via internet exchanges increased exponentially since the pandemic highlighting the need for the IX infrastructure to meet the demand," says Swathi Arunaa, senior market analyst, IDC India.
