Implications of Hybrid Work and Workforce Attrition on Virtual Client Computing Environments

This IDC Perspective discusses the implications of hybrid work and workforce attrition on virtual client computing environments. The "Great Resignation" is driven by a wide range of demographic events, including the vacuum left by the mass movement of experienced resources out of the labor pool. This movement has been particularly impactful in fields with a small population of experienced resources, like client virtualization. This document discusses some of the impacts of that movement on enterprises and suggests methods for addressing them within the client virtualization space."The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated already existing demographic trends in IT, not always to positive results," said Shannon Kalvar, research director, IT Service Management and Client Virtualization at IDC. "In the case of client virtualization, the pandemic both decreased the available workforce and simultaneously dramatically increased the workload for those who remained. This trend is likely to continue for some time, forcing enterprises to adapt to a world where there may not be workers to fill key technical positions for the foreseeable future."
