This IDC Market Note discusses the implications of the recent announcements by major cloud providers like Google, AWS, and Microsoft regarding the waiving of data egress charges for customers permanently moving their data to another cloud provider or on premises. The move can be seen as an inaugural effort toward alleviating long-standing customer concerns about egress costs. However, it is to be noted that this waiver is only for one-time final data transfers and does not apply to recurring data egress costs, which constitute the bulk of egress expenses for cloud users.
