This IDC study presents IDC's taxonomy for physical security technology. The video surveillance market is increasingly becoming an essential component of the large physical security technology market. However, it is not the only component, physical security integrates hardware and software to provide situational awareness to the enterprise. Such awareness not only provides safety and security for business assets and personnel but provides insights into the state of business processes, enabling business planners to assess the health of the business itself."Physical security is increasingly an exercise in the application of technology," notes Mike Jude, research director, Video Surveillance and Vision Applications, at IDC. "It depends heavily on video surveillance technology but also includes other technology such as sensors and access control devices. Vendors in the physical security space need to understand where they fit and be prepared to address needs outside of their immediate technology focus."
