IDC Perspective: Introducing IDC's Hybrid-First Framework for Education

This IDC Perspective outlines IDC's hybrid-first framework for education, a guide that helps education leaders through their hybrid-first strategy and transformation. Stay-at-home orders in early 2020 locked 90% of the world's students out of school — that's roughly 1.3 billion students. This forced a rapid shift to online learning and operations for millions of students, faculty, and staff that had little to no experience with digital learning, teaching, or administration. Today, institutions are confronting ongoing disruptions that are forcing a constant shift between remote and in person. While many schools have been able to adapt, too many are still struggling to establish an effective operating model that enables them to seamlessly shift between in-person and remote operations as conditions change. To succeed moving forward, education leaders must redefine the business of their institutions and prepare for a future where hybrid education experiences are the expectation, rather than the exception. However, they must think beyond hybrid learning in the classroom to equip the entire institution to shift between physical and digital services as conditions change in real time. In other words, they must take a "hybrid-first approach" to operations and service delivery."While schools have taken drastic measures to ensure continuity of service during the past few years, too many are still struggling to establish an effective operating model that enables them to seamlessly shift between physical and digital service delivery. This poses a significant threat to the mission of institutions around the globe and puts the well-being and success of our youth and future workforce at risk," said Matthew Leger, research manager for IDC's Worldwide Education Digital Transformation Strategies practice. "By leveraging IDC's hybrid-first framework, education institutions can move beyond pandemic-era crisis response tactics and embrace disruption with open arms."
