The Growing Role of Artificial Intelligence in Manufacturing: Perspectives from IDC's Worldwide Future of Operations Survey, 2021

This IDC Perspective interprets the findings of IDC's 2021Worldwide Future of Operations Survey to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) within the process and discrete manufacturing sectors. Results from IDC's 2021 Worldwide Future of Operations Survey show a clear disparity within the manufacturing sector regarding the integration of artificial intelligence. Discrete manufacturers have been more committed to AI and seen more fruitful results from associated projects, increasing the appetite for prospective AI spending. Process manufacturers — much like overall survey respondents — reported mixed results from AI deployments and subsequently indicated a more reserved approach to future investment in the technology."Manufacturers — similar to their peers in other industries — are early on the learning curve with respect to the use of AI in operations," according to Leif Eriksen, VP, Future of Operations, IDC. "The survey data points to a more measured, industry-centric approach as well as the need to develop strong capabilities in operational data management."
