Google Cloud Platform: Positioning for Innovation With Data Products
This IDC Market Note explores the fact Google says there is demand from customers to move away from traditional relational, on-premises databases to the cloud. To this end, it has made a number of enhancements to its Spanner (relational database service) and AlloyDB PostgreSQL-compatible database, with the option to run it in the cloud, on-premises, or even on a laptop (for developers). Meanwhile, its acquisition of British AI firm DeepMind in 2014 gave it a good foundation to build out its AI and ML capabilities. Google is not attempting to simply be the cheapest place to store and analyze your data, but to become an innovator in AI/ML and database flexibility. But sensing the current mood of customers and prospects, it also announced some enhancements that it says should also bring down data storage costs.
