Generative AI in Engineering — A Revolution in Process

Generative AI in Engineering — A Revolution in Process

This IDC Perspective explores the opportunities and challenges for generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools, such as Open AI's ChatGPT, to improve engineering and product/process development. This document reviews fundamental aspects of how AI-driven content generation works, including the programmatic nature of creating new content and the role of large language models (LLMs) for training the GAI. This document also describes two strategies for deploying GAI to address the specific engineering needs of manufacturers, and it identifies the opportunities and risks. Finally, recommendations are provided for technology customers, vendors, and consultants."Generative AI represents a revolution that will significantly improve engineering for product and process development. Generative AI will enable engineers to achieve new levels of product innovation and creativity and will address many of the current talent shortages by upskilling employees and improving development processes that optimize product design, manufacturing, sourcing, and service," said John Snow, research director, Product Innovation Strategies at IDC.
