Future of Digital Infrastructure: DCIaaS Lays the Foundation for On-Premises PaaS and SaaS Strategies

This IDC Perspective looks at examples where dedicated infrastructure as a service (DCIaaS) is extending the XaaS model more broadly across enterprise IT environments and provides recommendations for how to optimize its benefits in coming years. The dedicated cloud infrastructure–as-a-service market has seen increased depth and maturity at the software stack level over the past 12 months, with vendors adding support for elements beyond virtual machines, container orchestration, and other system software up into the PaaS (platform-as-a-service) layer. Third-party software marketplaces around DCIaaS offerings are also growing in scope as vendors certify their wares for the platforms. IDC expects that over time, DCIaaS ecosystems will move measurably into the PaaS and SaaS layers, essentially duplicating the growth pattern exhibited by the public cloud ecosystem over the past 15 years. This trend will play a key role in the future of digital infrastructure as customers reconsider how best to distribute cloud workloads and applications and demand more options from their core vendors."It's a natural evolution for the DCIaaS market to expand into dedicated cloud platform as a service (DCPaaS) and dedicated cloud software as a service (DCSaaS)," said Chris Kanaracus, research director, Cloud Infrastructure Services at IDC. "This will take time, but IDC is already seeing clear signals of this market direction. Customers want 'cloud' and all its benefits in every location, whether it be public cloud, the edge, or their own datacenters."
