Artificial intelligence's potential to transform operations is mostly undisputed, yet real value has been difficult to extract, and lofty expectations have often gone unmet. In the context of operations, the AI market remains immature, especially relative to the hype that has been generated by the results achieved in the business-to-consumer world."AI holds a great deal of promise as an analytical tool for helping deliver the next wave of improvements in operational excellence and resilience," says Leif Eriksen, research vice president, Future of Operations at IDC. "However, approaches to deploying AI in operations to date have mostly missed the mark."
