Defining the CIAM Market Opportunity: An IDC Market Study
This IDC Market Perspective is meant to accompany IDC's November 2022 U.S. Security B2C Identity Survey, permitting IDC to interpret and inject more color or opinion around survey findings and relate them to recent market developments. User surveys provide IDC with a different perspective regarding the state of the market. Rightfully so, identity vendors emphasize their new product/service offerings including features and capabilities the market has yet to appreciate and absorb. Workforce IAM offers passwordless, zero trust, AI/ML, and so forth that are all possible today for organizations lucky enough to have the staff, skills, budget, and limited baggage associated with former identity investments. Alternatively, CIAM solutions offer consent management, customer data access for compliance purposes, social media single sign-on, and advanced authentication in an as-needed or step-up fashion and related marketing and cross-selling opportunities. IDC's next survey of the CIAM market will focus 100% on organizations doing ecommerce implementation where customers experience a full online and direct shopping experience. "Customer identity and access management has different meanings for many organizations. Although there were many reports of companies launching new capabilities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, only 11% of survey respondents said they didn't have CIAM installed beforehand, bounded by education/government institutions on the high end (18%) and healthcare organizations on the low end (4%)," said Jay Bretzmann, research vice president for Security Products at IDC.
