Is Cybersecurity a Strong Link or a Weak Link Problem? Considering the Conundrum Posed at Tanium Converge 2022

This IDC Market Note reviews the interesting dynamic posed by Malcolm Gladwell at Tanium Converge 2022. In solving a problem, Gladwell suggests that you first should determine if the problem is best solved by allocating resources toward the strongest assets or if the problem is best addressed at the weakest link. IDC concludes that both strong and weak links need to be addressed in cybersecurity. What is worth noting is that the midpoint of strong link/weak link thinking is the endpoint. In this document, we discuss how Tanium takes telemetry from the endpoint to help a company better understand its threat environment, the value in prompting remediation and patch management, discovering vulnerabilities, and how to assess security and business risk for what is known from a company's endpoint management.
