This IDC study looks at how APIs enable communications SPs to commoditize connectivity and unlock additional revenue. Communications SPs aspire to be digital enablers, and this mindset has led them to invest in building underlay infrastructure and 5G networks; and adopt cloud-native architectures, software-defined networks (SDNs), AI/ML, and GenAI, and so forth. Despite these efforts to better monetize their services, including 5G, revenue growth has remained slow."The Asia/Pacific region is home to more than 50% of mobile subscribers globally, indicating that the end users are digitizing the way they use services rapidly. The most used network application programming interfaces (APIs) are those of digital identity such as number verify or SIM-related APIs for know your customer (KYC) and for prevention of cyber-frauds in real time. Although APIs present an opportunity for communications SPs to create solutions that enhance their offerings, there is still work to be done for communications SPs to effectively monetize connectivity services," says Swathi Arunaa, senior research analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific, Telecom and IoT Practice.
