Building the Ecosystem for Internet Exchanges in Asia/Pacific

Building the Ecosystem for Internet Exchanges in Asia/Pacific

This IDC Market Perspective investigates the current state of technology and business models of leading internet exchanges (IXs) in Asia/Pacific and the largest IX in Europe. Since the mid-1990s, when the first IXs were established, the technology and the makeup of content and traffic have evolved rapidly so that cloud service providers (CSPs), communications SPs, and internet service providers (ISPs), content delivery networks (CDNs), and content providers can connect in an efficient manner by peering through IXs. "The industry has evolved into commercial and NPF organizations that each serves the market slightly different but ultimately are collaborating as much as they are competing," says Bill Rojas, IDC Adjunct Research Director. Rojas adds, "IP traffic via the public exchanges is growing at double-digit growth even prior to the launch of 5G services and can be expected to be impacted by 5G in the next several years."
