Building the Business Case for Migrating SAP to the Cloud

Building the Business Case for Migrating SAP to the Cloud

This IDC Market Perspective highlights the benefits of moving SAP workloads with infrastructure as a service. Modernizing SAP in a big bang transformation is intimidating and hard to justify for many organizations. Moving existing SAP instances to IaaS provides a route to more gradual modernization that spreads cost and risk. The business case for change will need to be multifaceted though, typically based on cost reduction and opportunities for growth. There should also be a mix of technical and business benefits at each stage of the modernization process. "Thinking of the move of SAP to infrastructure as a service as a 'lift and shift' to the cloud will lead to a compromised and weak business case for change. Different opportunities exist and must be assessed and capitalized on to build the case for change," said Tom Seal, senior research director, European Enterprise Applications.
