The Utilities sector provides various utility services, including electric power generation and transmission; natural gas distribution; steam supply; water supply and sewage removal. The sector is overwhelmingly dominated by the Electric Power Generation cluster of industries (IBISWorld reports 22111a-e) and the Electric Power Transmission industry (22112), which combine to generate 71.2% of sector revenue in 2023. Natural Gas Distribution (22121) is the next largest sector service and accounts for 17.7% of sector revenue in the current year. Trends in these three industries are dependent on various factors but most notably include demand for electric power and pricing trends of the various resources used to generate electricity.
The sector comprises operators engaged in the provision of various utility services, such as electric power, natural gas, steam supply, water supply and sewage removal. Excluded from this sector are operators primarily engaged in waste management services classified in Subsector 562, Waste Management and Remediation Services. These operators also collect, treat and dispose of waste materials; however, they do not use sewer systems or sewage treatment facilities.
