Motels, Hostels and Holiday Parks in New Zealand - Industry Market Research Report
Motels, Hostels and Holiday Parks in New Zealand
The Motels, Hostels and Holiday Parks industry faced heavy restrictions on demand during the COVID-19 pandemic. From March 2020 to June 2022, the Central Government (Te Kawanatanga o Aotearoa) closed New Zealand's international border, causing a collapse in overseas visitors to New Zealand. Intermittent nationwide and city-wide lockdowns also disrupted demand. Overall, revenue has declined by an annualised 1.1% to an estimated $2.5 billion over the past five years. Nonetheless, high levels of government stimulus, increased household discretionary incomes and restrictions on outbound travel, caused higher than usual demand from domestic tourists. These trends protected the industry from the worst effects of the pandemic and have helped engineer a strong recovery - including an anticipated 21.5% revenue increase - as restrictions have eased.
