Fabricated Wood Manufacturing in Australia
Fabricated wood manufacturers have faced several challenges over the past few years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, sinking demand from downstream manufacturers and greater use of substitutes. Shrinking plantation tree availability has raised timber prices and industry operating costs, while ongoing import penetration has constrained industry prices and profitability. Dwelling commencements and residential building construction activity have weakened and dampened demand for fabricated wood. Overall, industry revenue has declined at an annualised 0.7% over the past five years and is expected to total $1.7 billion in 2023-24, when revenue will slump by an estimated 4.1%.
Companies in the industry manufacture veneers and plywood, and wood boards and sheets from reconstituted wood fibres, such as wood chips, sawdust, wood shavings, timber slabs and off-cuts. The industry also includes firms that manufacture timber and non-timber laminates.
