Craft Beer Production in Australia
Craft beer production has expanded as a share of the total beer market over the past five years. Changing consumer tastes, particularly a shift towards premium beers and a growing emphasis on quality across liquor retailing, have benefited craft brewers. Strong demand has allowed the industry to expand, with numerous craft beer producers operating in every state and territory. Nonetheless, the COVID-19 pandemic put pressure on craft brewers, with periods of government-imposed lockdowns constraining demand from hospitality firms and limiting breweries' ability to sell their products at their brewpubs. Revenue has increased at an annualised rate of 4.1% over the five years through 2022-23 to $1.0 billion. This trend includes growth of 4.9% in 2022-23 alone.
