A vacuum drainage system, also known as a vacuum sewage system or vacuum sanitary system, is an alternative method of handling wastewater and sewage in buildings, ships, airplanes, and other facilities. It operates on the principle of creating a vacuum within a pipe network to move wastewater from individual fixtures to a collection point. Components include vacuum pumps, vacuum interface units at fixtures, a vacuum piping network, collection tanks, and a control system.
When a fixture (e.g., toilet) is used, a vacuum interface unit opens, and a vacuum is created in the connected piping network. The vacuum pressure moves the wastewater from the fixture to the local collection tank.
