Commonly used phase-change immersed liquid cooling systems for data centers have two different system forms, called horizontal and vertical systems. The two systems can be compared in four aspects as follows:

2. Reliability: In the horizontal system, the server nodes are arranged in parallel, and there may be interaction between the nodes. For example, if the heat power of a node suddenly increases significantly or a fault occurs, it may interfere with adjacent nodes. If the cooling liquid in the horizontal system is accidentally contaminated, causing a change in the physical properties of the liquid, especially the dielectric properties, it may cause extremely adverse effects on the entire system, destroying all internal circuit components and causing great harm. In the vertical system, each node is sealed separately, and they are independent and do not interfere with each other. Even if the cooling liquid in one unit is contaminated, it will not endanger other units, and the system is safe and reliable.
3. Maintainability: The horizontal system supports online hot-swappable maintenance, which means that when a node is taken out for maintenance, the system power does not need to be disconnected, and it does not affect the normal operation of other nodes. However, during maintenance, the liquid is always boiling, and there is a large amount of boiling vapor leakage. The vertical system also supports online hot-swappable maintenance, and when a node unit is opened for maintenance, the leakage of boiling working fluid is small. However, since each sealed unit contains cooling liquid, control devices, and other structures, the unit weight may be as high as 40 kg to 50 kg, making it difficult to operate.
4. Cost: The overall manufacturing cost and control scheme cost of the horizontal system are relatively low, and there are relatively mature cases and design guidelines as references. The vertical system requires not only the design of the cabinet but also the design of the sealed shell, control device, and cooling structure for each node unit. The system is complex, the design and manufacturing costs are high, and there are few market application cases available for reference, requiring large research and development costs.
