Global Magnetic Reed Sensor Supply, Demand and Key Producers, 2023-2029
The global Magnetic Reed Sensor market size is expected to reach $ million by 2029, rising at a market growth of % CAGR during the forecast period (2023-2029).
A reed sensor is a reed switch that uses a magnet or electromagnet to generate a magnetic field that turns a reed switch inside the sensor on or off. A reed switch is a pair of electrical contacts that form a closed circuit when they come in contact and an open circuit when they separate. Reed switches form the basis of reed sensors. Reed sensors have a switch and a magnet that power the contacts to open and close. The system is contained in a sealed container. This device reliably controls circuits in a variety of industrial and commercial products.
There are three types of reed sensors: normally open reed sensors, normally closed reed sensors and latching reed sensors. All three types can use traditional magnets or electromagnets, and each type of magnet is driven in a slightly different way.
Normally Open Reed Sensors: These are reed sensors that are in the open (off) position by default. When the magnet in the sensor reaches the reed switch, it turns each connection into an opposing pole of charge. The new attraction between the two connections forces them to close the circuit together. Devices with normally open reed sensors are powered off most of the time unless the magnet is intentionally active.
A normally closed reed sensor creates a closed circuit as its default position. The reed switch will not open and break the circuit connection until the magnet triggers a specific attraction force. Electrical current flows through the normally closed reed sensor until the magnet forces the two reed switch connectors to share the same magnetic pole, thus forcing the two components apart.
Reed sensors include normally closed and normally open reed sensor functions. Instead of defaulting to a powered or unpowered state, the reed sensor remains in the last position until it is forced to change. If the electromagnet forces the switch into an open circuit state, the switch will remain open until the electromagnet energizes and closes the circuit, and vice versa. The switch's operating and release points create a natural hysteresis that locks the reed in place.
Reed sensors have numerous applications in almost every industry. They provide a very simple and controllable mechanism for safely opening and closing circuits. Industrial facilities typically use one of various reed sensor types for equipment that operates passively without direct intervention or that automatically shuts down power in the event of a malfunction.
These default controls, controlled by normally open and normally closed switches, create a safe and efficient workspace.
Home Appliances: Reed sensors work well in appliances that create wet or moist environments, such as dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines, automation and manufacturing. Reed sensors have countless practical applications in production, conveyor belts, cylinder pistons and automated factories. Machinery uses reed sensors to detect limits and facilitate on/off functions.
Automotive Industry: Automotive products need to meet strict standards to prevent failure. Both auto parts and OEM parts use reed sensors to create the circuits that run in car engines. These devices require circuits that can withstand high temperatures, proximity to other circuits (aided by nonferrous metal barriers), vibration, and gases.
Electronics: Reed sensors aid in the opening and closing of automatic doors. They also serve as proximity contacts for security devices used on doors and windows or devices using a clamshell design.
Extreme Conditions: Reed sensors provide reliable performance in applications under extreme temperatures or other harsh conditions.
General Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM): OEM manufacturers use reed sensors for a variety of purposes, such as speed sensors for gears and safety switches.
Medical: Electronic medical devices, such as pacemakers, use reed sensors to provide efficient, reliable circuit operation and minimize maintenance requirements. Magnetic reed sensors are also used in devices such as defibrillators, sensors, feeding tubes and hospital beds.
Entertainment and Fitness Products: Reed sensors are used in a variety of entertainment and fitness equipment. For example, magnetic reed sensors serve as speed sensors for bicycle wheels and treadmills.
