The maintenance-free aspect of these accumulators refers to their design without regular maintenance, such as checking the liquid level, replacing the seals or cleaning the accumulators. This is achieved by using a capsule or diaphragm that separates the hydraulic fluid from the gas (usually nitrogen) used to compress the fluid. When hydraulic fluid is pumped into the accumulator, it compresses nitrogen, which stores energy as potential energy. When the hydraulic system needs additional power, the hydraulic oil is released from the accumulator, and the stored energy is used to provide power for the hydraulic system. The air bag or diaphragm design can prevent the hydraulic fluid from contacting with nitrogen without maintenance.
