Membrane nitrogen generators use membranes composed of thousands of hollow polymer fibers to achieve this separation. These fibers have a unique structure that allows only oxygen from the air and any remaining water vapor to escape through their walls. This process is called permeation. Once outside the fibers, the O₂ is exhausted from the membrane housing and disposed of externally or in a secure area. This leaves the N₂ inside the hollow fibers, ready to be collected at the outlet. With the water vapor removed, the resulting nitrogen is very dry, which is an added benefit for its specialized applications.
