According to our (Global Info Research) latest study, the global Epoxy Toughened Adhesives market size was valued at US$ 189 million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of USD 262 million by 2031 with a CAGR of 4.7% during review period.
Epoxy resin is an important type of thermosetting resin and the most widely used matrix resin in polymer composites. Epoxy resin has excellent bonding properties, wear resistance, mechanical properties, electrical insulation properties, chemical stability, high and low temperature resistance, as well as low shrinkage, easy processing and low cost. It is widely used in adhesives, electronic instruments, light industry, construction, machinery, aerospace, coatings, electronic and electrical insulation materials and advanced composite materials.
Because pure epoxy resin has a high cross-linking structure, it has the disadvantages of brittleness, poor fatigue resistance, heat resistance and impact toughness, which makes it difficult to meet the requirements of engineering technology, and its application is subject to certain restrictions. Therefore, the modification of epoxy resin has always been a hot topic of research at home and abroad.
Tougheners for epoxy resins can be divided into two categories: reactive and non-reactive tougheners. Reactive tougheners refer to polyamide resins containing unsaturated bonds and amide groups. Liquid polysulfide compounds, polyazelaic anhydride, etc. have both toughening and curing effects. Reactive toughening agents refer to common plasticizers, such as DOP, DBP, TCP, TPP, etc., because they are not very compatible with epoxy resin, so the amount should not be too much.
Many polymers are brittle at room temperature, which greatly reduces their use value. For example, polystyrene has good transparency, electrical insulation, and easy processing, but it needs to be added with rubber to increase toughness to have higher impact strength. This additive that gives plastics better toughness is called a toughening agent, also known as an impact modifier.
Global key players of epoxy toughened adhesives include Kaneka, Solvay, Huntsman, Olin Corporation, etc. Global top four manufacturers hold a share over 74%. China is the largest producer of epoxy toughened adhesives, holds a share over 41%, followed by North America with a market share of around 23%. Asia-Pacific is the largest market of epoxy toughened adhesives, with a share about 63%, followed by Europe with a share about 18%. In terms of product, rubber toughening agent is the largest segment, with a share over 59%. And in terms of application, the largest application is coating, with a share over 33%, followed by electronics.
Epoxy resin has become the most important thermosetting resin. It is widely used in many fields because of its excellent heat resistance, electrical insulation, adhesion, water resistance, mechanical properties and chemical resistance. However, epoxy resin itself also has many performance defects, such as large internal stress, brittleness, poor impact resistance and moisture resistance of its cured product. The application scope of epoxy resin in certain specific high-tech fields is limited to varying degrees by these undesirable characteristics. Therefore, toughening and modifying general-purpose epoxy resin is one of the hot issues in epoxy resin research.
At present, there are three main ways to toughen epoxy resin: (a) adding rubber elastomers, thermoplastic resins or liquid crystal polymers to the epoxy resin matrix as dispersed phase toughening; (b) forming a semi-interpenetrating or interpenetrating network structure in the epoxy resin network to achieve the purpose of toughening; (c) using chemical synthesis methods to prepare epoxy resins containing flexible segments or curing agents containing flexible segments to cure epoxy resins.
The epoxy toughened adhesives industry is relatively concentrated. At present, there are many companies producing epoxy resin toughening agents in the world, especially in China. The main market participants are Kaneka, Solvay, Huntsman, Olin Corporation, Wenzhou Qingming Chemical, Baling Huaxing Petrochemical, Qishi, etc.
The research on toughening of epoxy resin in China started late. In the past, the commonly used toughening method was to modify epoxy resin with rubber elastomers such as terminal carboxyl nitrile rubber. Compared with general toughening agents, the price of CTBN is undoubtedly expensive. CVC is the first company in the world to develop and produce CTBN. Few companies in the world can compete with CVC in terms of price and product quality. Some companies can produce CTBN in small batches, but the price is too high. Therefore, CVC's products have become a better choice.
