An avalanche rectifier is a special type of diode rectifier that works on the principle of the avalanche effect. The avalanche effect means that when the reverse voltage of the PN junction reaches a certain critical value, the current will increase rapidly and cause the electric field in the junction region to increase, eventually leading to the breakdown of the PN junction. During the process of avalanche breakdown, the voltage of the junction region remains unchanged, so the avalanche diode can work at a higher reverse voltage. Avalanche diodes are commonly used in high voltage, high power applications such as power circuits, high voltage regulators, arc fuses, etc. Their main advantages are low reverse leakage current and high breakdown voltage, thus enabling reliable operation in high voltage, high temperature and high radiation environments. The main disadvantages of avalanche diodes compared to normal diodes are higher reverse leakage current, higher voltage drop and resistance at forward voltage.
