6PPD, fully named N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, is an antioxidant and antiozonant that helps prevent the degradation and cracking of rubber compounds caused by exposure to oxygen, ozone and temperature fluctuation. 6PPD is used industry wide to help tires resist degradation and cracking, which is vital for driver and passenger safety.
Rigid Demand:
6PPD is an antidegradant (antioxidant and antiozonant) added to tire rubber to protect the rubber polymer from reaction with oxygen (O2) and ozone (O3). Oxidation renders tire rubber brittle, leading to the formation of cracks, particularly under dynamic stress, which can compromise the performance and safety of tires. Several qualities of 6PPD make it an optimal antidegradant for tires, including its solubility and mobility in rubber, reactivity with ozone, and compatibility with the suite of chemicals and processes used to create tires. 6PPD is also used to protect the rubber in transmission belts, hoses, automotive mounts and bushings, and other mechanical products. It is one of several para-phenylenediamine (PPD) additives used to protect rubber materials. Tire manufacturers have used 6PPD since the 1950s to keep tires from degrading too quickly. Market demand of 6PPD is still very rigid presently, which supports the industry to grow slowly and steadily.

One of the most important concerns of 6PPD is its threat to environment. 6PPD has been used in tires for 60 years. As tires wear, tiny particles of rubber are left behind on roads and parking lots, breaking down into a byproduct, 6PPD-quinone, that is deadly to salmon, steelhead trout and other aquatic wildlife when rains wash it into rivers.
