Over the last decade, West Africa has emerged as a key destination for gold mining in Africa, which was previously dominated by South Africa. The region is proving attractive due to its economic viability and geographical potential, with Ghana, Burkina Faso and Mali the top three gold-producing countries in West Africa. Production from the top three West African countries totalled 8,320koz in 2021, which was up by 4.9% over the previous year. Ghana accounted for the largest share of total African output, with 13.9% in 2021, followed by Mali (9.4%), Burkina Faso (9.4%) and Guinea (3.2%). Looking ahead, in 2022, production from the top three countries in the West African region is expected to expand by 1% altogether, to reach 8,404.9koz. Burkina Faso is expected to be the key contributor to this growth, with higher production from the Hounde, Boungou and Bouly mines - mainly due to the higher-grade ore milled and the expected start of the Bombore Project during the year. Over the forecast period (2022-2026), production from the top three West African countries is expected to grow at an annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of 0.5% to 8.6Moz. Some of the key upcoming projects include the Bombore and Kiaka projects in Burkina Faso, the Obuasi Phase 2, Ahafo North and Namdini projects in Ghana and the Kobada project in Mali.
