The company has product development, manufacturing, sales, technology and customer service operations in Sweden, Belgium, and China. It sells cars through a network of dealers worldwide.

In May 2023, Volvo Cars through its corporate venture capital arm, the Volvo Cars Tech Fund established partnership with Plug and Play, a technology investor and innovation platform driver, to bring cutting-edge technology for sustainable mobility. Under this partnership, Plug and Play has opened an innovation platform in Gothenburg, Sweden. Volvo Cars is a founding partner of the new platform, which is expected to engage more than 500 start-ups every year, and additional partners will be joining over time.

In May 2023, Volvo Car opened a new design studio in Shanghai, which joins its existing studios in Gothenburg and Camarillo, to provide space for designers and creative engineers. The studio aims to be one of the most comprehensive design studios of global car brands in Asia and is equipped with all the functions needed to facilitate whole design process from concept to production. The capability of the studio allows for producing scale to full size models for interior, exterior, color and material, as well as UX design.

Scope
  • Volvo Cars integrates its software with other technology providers, to offer its customers with range of products and services. It offers flexibility and seamless integration allowing customers to choose interfaces from a variety of providers and personalize their cars to their own requirements. Its internal software development teams work in collaboration with its partners in global network of technology hubs. Its Zenseact, a software developing company in autonomous driving and advanced driver-assistance systems and its collaborations with HaleyTek (in Android based infotainment software platforms), Google (in infotainment systems), and Nvidia (in core computing) provide effective means to achieve rapid technological innovation.
  • To accelerate electrification, Volvo Cars along with Northvolt and their joint venture, NOVO Energy, established battery manufacturing plant and R&D center, to engage in development of new battery technology. In connectivity, it continued its partnership with Google, to integrate infotainment system powered by Android. Volvo Cars rolled out its Android-powered infotainment system in XC40 Recharge and C40 models.
  • In support of its software developments, it is transforming electric architecture of its cars. The company’s electric cars will feature core computing system that dispenses with many electronic control units. Powered by two NVIDIA systems that execute over 280 trillion operations per second, the computing system will carry out complex tasks, such as processing information from large number of sensors that are integral to its comprehensive safety systems. With fully connected cars, its core system and in-house software stack will create full control of the integration flow from code to the car.
