United States of America (USA) Permian Basin Oil and Gas Shale Market Analysis and Forecast, 2021-2026
Summary
The Permian Basin is the largest oil producing shale play in the US. As it is majorly located in Texas, it benefits from the dense network of oil and gas pipelines in the state as well as access to downstream infrastructure along the Gulf Coast. In 2022, oil production from the play observed a remarkable turnaround after witnessing a considerable drop during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, crude oil production in the Permian Basin averaged nearly 5.0 million barrels of oil per day (mmbd) from January to May of this year. Back in 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the US, the play averaged over 4.8 mmbd during January to March. However, following the oil price crash due to worldwide lockdowns, the Permian oil production dropped below 4.0 mmbd in May 2020 and then hovered around 4.3 mmbd for the remainder of the year.
